Pulmonary surfactant is a lipoprotein substance, essential for respiratory function. In fact, by covering the pneumocytes like a thin film, it prevents them from collapsing during respiratory movements. Surfactant dysfunctions can also have genetic causes.

Surfactant dysfunction can have variable clinical implications, with forms developing acutely in neonates and less severe forms presenting in childhood or adulthood.
