Pulmonary surfactant is a lipoprotein substance, essential for respiratory function. In fact, by covering the pneumocytes like a thin film, it prevents them from collapsing during respiratory movements. Surfactant dysfunctions can also have genetic causes.
This test is for those with a positive family history of surfactant dysfunction and/or for those experiencing breathing difficulties not otherwise justified. Surfactant dysfunction can have variable clinical implications, with forms developing acutely in neonates and less severe forms presenting in childhood or adulthood.

The analysis takes into consideration the mutation of germline DNA, it investigates SNP and Indel mutations up to 150 bp.
