Zilien spielen bei vielen zellulären Prozessen eine wichtige Rolle, und Mutationen in Genen, die Zilien beeinflussen, können eine Vielzahl von Erkrankungen verursachen, die als Ziliopathien bekannt sind. Diese Störungen können mehrere Organe betreffen, darunter Augen, Nieren und Leber, und eine Reihe von Symptomen wie Fettleibigkeit, Entwicklungsverzögerungen und Sehverlust verursachen.
